H&DAA controls several stretches of the River Derwent, offering varied river fishing for chub, barbel, roach, dace, perch, pike and other species.
The River Derwent provides some of the Association’s most varied river fishing. Our waters include stretches at Stamford Bridge, Elvington and Gunby/Breighton, giving members the opportunity to fish everything from productive swims and purpose-built platforms to quieter, more natural stretches of river.
The character of the river varies considerably between sections. Members should be prepared to explore, read the water and move between swims rather than assuming fish will be evenly distributed throughout a stretch.
Chub, barbel, roach and dace are among the principal species, with specimen fish possible and some excellent sport available at the right time of year.
The River Derwent contains a varied range of coarse and predatory species:
There is genuine specimen potential, with barbel over 10lb, chub over 6lb, roach over 2lb, perch over 3lb and dace approaching or exceeding 12oz possible.
Float fishing, ledgering and feeder fishing are all productive approaches, while spinning and drop-shotting can also be effective where appropriate.
The summer months can produce excellent bags of chub, while autumn is particularly worth considering for barbel. Pike fishing comes into its own during the colder winter months.

H&DAA’s River Derwent fishing is spread across several separate stretches. Please make sure you know the boundaries and correct access point for the stretch you intend to fish before setting off.
The H&DAA stretch is on the left bank looking downstream from Stamford Bridge. There are seven purpose-built fishing platforms.
Free parking is available in the council car park beside the bridge. The Association’s fishing begins beyond the car park; please observe the fishery boundary signs.
For the section above the bridge, members should not park in the workshop car park. Pedestrian access remains available via the stile. Limited roadside parking is available opposite the workshop near the bridge, or members can park responsibly in the village.
Parking for the section below the weir is available near the church. Access to the river is across the field to the H&DAA access point downstream of the weir. Fishing is downstream from the Association’s access point.
H&DAA fishing at Gunby and Breighton extends along the east bank of the river. Access is from the Gunby end via the old railway track and woodland path. Members should familiarise themselves with the upper and lower fishery limits before fishing.
Accessibility varies considerably between the different River Derwent stretches. Some areas are relatively straightforward to reach, while others involve natural riverbanks, uneven ground, longer walks and more difficult access.
Members with limited mobility should consider the particular stretch and conditions before travelling. River levels, weather and ground conditions can significantly affect accessibility.
The Derwent is a natural river environment. Deep and fast-flowing water, steep or slippery banks, flooding, livestock, difficult access and overhead power lines may be encountered depending on the stretch.
Conditions can change significantly following rainfall. Members should assess the river and banks on arrival and should not attempt to fish areas where conditions are unsafe.
Livestock may be present on most stretches other than Stamford Bridge. Please keep gates secure, respect farmland and never interfere with animals.
All members fishing the River Derwent must comply with the current Hull & District Anglers’ Association Rules, observe the boundaries of each individual stretch and comply with any additional notices displayed at the fishery.
Membership of HDAA is open to anyone who agrees to abide by our common-sense Fishery Rules. All membership permits run from 1st Jan to 31st December annually. Membership allows angling on most of the Association’s venues from 5.00am to 10.00pm (except Carlton on Trent where the start time is 7.00am).
We have teamed up with shops, companies, suppliers, etc. to offer discounts to our members on production of a valid membership card.
